Producers' Strategies

MySpace has become quite important in terms of music video producing as it has revealed artists such as Lily Allen, who had only begun her music career on MySpace and has now got 2 hit albums and her own record label. YouTube has also been a major influence on amateur music videos as anyone can upload their music videos to YouTube just like Rebecca Black and her song Friday which has become very popular with mixed reviews recently.
Music videos also started to replace the actual artists on shows such as Top Of The Pops for example Gorrilaz had their music video played rather than performing themselves as they were not there.

Extension Of Income/Power

Star power, is how the artists chooses to represent themselves to the public. There are several forms of star power three of them being; Economic Power, Artistic Power and Ideological Power. A good example of Economic Power would be 50 cent as in most if not all of his music videos he is seen to be extremely wealthy with loads of jewelery and fast cars. This is him portraying to the audience that he has his power through his earnings. Whereas an example for Artistic Power would be Lady Gaga as she has control of her own image. She doesn't have to follow fashion as she is the one who sets it. And finally good example for Ideological Power would be Bono from U2 as he will try to influence the audience into seeing the caring protagonist that he is, as Ideological Power is to influence the audiences opinion.

Promotion

The promotion of artists has greatly risen over the years, and so has the number of artists and genres. A lot of promotions nowadays are done on the internet because it reaches the widest audience possible. However there is still quite a bit of print advertisements for artists as well as live publicity.
Music videos have become the new way artists express themselves, this can be known as their 'star vehicle' as it is their music videos that can take their career further or grind it to a halt. People will see an artists video and talk about it and it may become something memorable, in either a good light or bad.

Extension Of Outlets

In the mid-60s Top of the Tops was born, a TV show which presents bands and artists playing their music live to a live audience. This was a revolutionary way of which the bands could broadcast themselves other than on the radio. This was a very popular TV show and then a couple of decades later there were channels that were released which were dedicated to playing music videos, such as MTV, Kiss and Smash! Hits. And lately in the last decade the internet has stolen the spotlight from the televison as you can watch music videos online for free and even illegally download them.

The Captain

Questions

1 What similarities do you observe in the videos you have looked at?

2 How is your chosen genre different from another?

3 Can you define in your own words the audience type for this genre?

1. Both videos appear to have very little reference to the lyrics being said, The Captain is set on a pirate boat, which would help match the songs title but other than that there is not much connection. Both videos are being sung to camera rather than having the song represented cinematically. Both songs have bizarre and seemingly irrelevant lyrics. Yet they are both portrayed in a meaningful fashion.

2. The genre that i have chosen is different to other genres because the music played by this band is all using instruments such as the guitar drums and bass, where as other genres my use equipment such as synthisizers or electronic keyboards, which provide completely different styles of music, than this one. Other genres such as dance or electronic have little or no lyrics to the songs.

3. The target audience for these songs would mostly be people aged from 17 to 25, interested in rock music and enjoy singing along to interesting lyrics. And enjoy the music made by the stereotypical band made up of guitars and drums.
